coz we can girls

I would like to introduce to you the ladies that are behind the production team 'Coz We Can'. Clare Plueckhahn & Fran Derham work together as content creators telling stories through words, stills and film. One of their projects was producing the film 'First Love' starting Nikki van Dijk, Jess Laing and India Payne. If the ladies are not at their computers, they're in the ocean, at the movies or on a mountain. Clare working the lens and Fran the pen.

First Love is about love, friendship and following your dreams. This feature length film follows the lives of three passionate young girls from Phillip Island and documents their trip to Hawaii – the first step on their journey to making a career out of surfing.

When taking with Fran she shared how Coz We Can and First Love manifested...

"Clare and I met when we were first working in a commercial photography studio in Melbourne. She was shooting and I was producing. Long story short - one day she came up to me and said 'I'm making a surf movie'. I said 'Well make sure it has a story in it because I'm sick of seeing surf movies with no story'. And she said - well why don't you help us make it. I have a background as a writer so I naturally became the writer/producer of this girls surf movie. Next thing we know we're spending every spare moment down on the Island with Claire Gorman (Director), Nikki van Dijk, Jess Laing and India Payne. And so First Love was born."

I asked what the next step was for the girls, in which Fran replied...

"After working together on First Love we decided that we made a good team. Clare makes things look beautiful and I make shit happen. She shoots, I write. She looks, I talk. Salt and Pepper. Clare still shoots stills and when she's doing that I'm freelancing in on TVC's and Australian Drama's. Then we come together to produce, shoot and direct our own work. We do all of Rip Curls My Bikini video content as well as working in the advertising and fashion industries -  for brands such as Target, Mister Zimi and Cotton On Foundation."

I asked Fran what they had studied to support their chosen career path...

"Clare has studied a Bachelor of Photography of RMIT at Melbourne and shoots for Pategonia, Billabong & Rip Curl for both stills and moving footage. As well as known for both her fashion and surf photography. I have an Arts Degree from Melbourne uni with a double major in Art History and Psychology as well as a Bachelor of communications in Advertising from RMIT. I used to be a copywriter - but now I produce and direct with Clare.
I have also worked on TV dramas such as the ABC's 'It's A Date', Foxtels 'Conspiracy 365' and projects like 'The Reef'."

Other short films that Clare and Fran have created are 'So It Goes' staring Billabong surfer Felicity Palmateer. And 'Lunch Break Short Surf Film' staring Serena Brooke, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Laura Enever, Codie Klein, Felicity Palmateer, the Wright sisters, Alyssa Lock and more.

When I asked Fran what was next for the Coz We Can team she stated...

"We just wrote, produced and directed out first piece of Drama! Six minutes of fantasy gold - which will be on the festival circuit in 2014. We have film ideas, TV series idea - mainly to do with surfing - and of course - girls kicking arse! Which one day, we'll get around to making."

It is inspirational that Fran and Clare are forging a place for women's surf films and I look forward to seeing more of what this creative duo produce in the future. So keep an eye out for the girls at Coz We Can.
