Words by Jaleesa Vincent,
My best result : 2nd in the All Girls Surf Show Down 2011 (14 & u), I'm quite new to the big surf comps. This year is my first entering bigger comps, I'm hoping for better luck next year and I've got lots of room to improve. I started surfing when I was around 6, but didn't start getting right into it until I was about 10. I just love the freedom you get, every thing just brushes off your mined, the feeling of catching a sick wave or doing a sick turn is amazing. I also love hooting people, "yew"!
My favorite board is a Yorky 5'1"x17 3/8"x 1 7/8. Its a really fun board and I'm improving lots on it. My favorite wave is 'The Pass' at Byron, we go there every Easter holidays and have so much fun. The wave is a long right hander and on good days runs all the way along the beach. I also like to do dancing and Oztag, dancing keeps me flexible and Oztag keeps me more fit, witch I believe helps me out in the surf. In Oztag I made it to the Queensland team and was going to play in the 2011 Australian Junior Oztag Championships but it was cancelled due to flooding.
I'm inspired by Carissa Moore, she shreds so hard... her turns are very powerful and even dose some airs, at only 16 year old she beat 4 times world champion Stephanie Gilmore. She is also a charger having surfed Jaws, a really big wave! I would love to be as good as her but would be very hard in three years time I would have to beat the world champion, witch would probably be her.
The balance between school and surfing does work out... I surf most mornings! This is my routine; get up 5:30 go for a surf until 7- 7:30 than go to school (witch starts at 8:30), than finish school at 2:45 get home at 3, eat, go for another surf 3:30-4 surf till 5-6 depending on sun light or if I have dancing. Of coarse I would rather not go to school, then I could surf all day everyday. But I got to do what I got to do... I do have a subject called 'school surfing' witch is really cool! On Monday mornings I can also surf from 8- 9:30 and get coached. Every Monday afternoon I have Brad Lee surf training, were I get coached on my surfing to help me improve...In the future I want to be a 'pro surfer' of coarse, it will be very hard because there is so many other people wanting the same thing, but all I can do is try my best!
